Our Vision

At St Margaret’s CE Primary School, we believe every child is Created to Shine. In Explore we nurture each child’s talents and curiosity so they grow in confidence and understanding. Our curriculum is rooted in our values of Love and Aspire-  love for learning and for one another, and the aspiration to reach their full potential.

Through our Explore projects, we aspire to nurture curious, confident learners who explore and appreciate the diverse world around them. We inspire children to love their planet - its people, places and environments - and to take responsibility for caring for it. Through engaging enquiry, active learning and meaningful experiences pupils aspire to understand how the world works and how they can make a positive difference. Rooted in love for our world and guided by curiosity, our Explore projects empower every child to see themselves as a global citizen with passion and purpose to shape a better future.

Our Aims

Our Explore curriculum aims to help pupils build knowledge, develop key skills, and find joy in learning. We encourage curiosity, creativity, and confidence so that every child can love learning and aspire to achieve their best.

Through our Explore projects we aim to:

  • Encourage a love and respect for the planet, promoting care and responsibility for the Earth’s resources and environments.

  • Build geographical skills in enquiry, investigation, map reading, fieldwork and data interpretation.

  • Deepen understanding of how human and physical processes shape the world and influence the way we live.

  • Foster an appreciation of diversity, helping children understand and respect different cultures, communities, and landscapes.

How We Teach

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced from Early Years to Year 6 to ensure learning builds step by step. Lessons are practical, engaging and inclusive, allowing all pupils to access the subject and succeed. We focus on developing key vocabulary, understanding and meaningful application of knowledge.

Projects are based around a carefully chosen enquiry question that enables the children to engage in challenging, motivating and enriching activities which ensure all pupils to achieve success. We encourage a sense of wonder of the world around them and inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Intentionally planned lessons ensure that children in our school are given opportunities to develop their learning each year, building on previous knowledge, skills and experiences. The detail of our learning for Explore is contained in the skills progression document.

The Difference It Makes

We know our curriculum is successful when pupils can talk confidently about their learning, show pride in their work, and demonstrate progress over time. Pupils enjoy Explore and understand its importance in everyday life.

Through talk and discussion, using geographical vocabulary, children are able to articulate their ideas about places, environments and processes. They are able to share their opinions about environmental or global issues and give reasons for their views. Practical and visual work allows children to demonstrate their learning of creating and interpreting maps, atlases and globes and through fieldwork children are able to describe what they have observed and explain patterns or changes.

Enrichment Opportunities

We enrich learning through experiences that bring Explore to life- such as trips, workshops, clubs and visitors. These opportunities help children love learning and aspire to new challenges.

  • Opportunities to explore the local area

  • Immersive curriculum days

  • Educational trips and visits

  • Visitors coming to school to share their knowledge and experiences
