At St Margaret’s CE Primary School, we believe every child is Created to Shine. In PE, we nurture each child’s talents and curiosity so they grow in confidence and understanding. Our curriculum is rooted in our values of Love and Aspire- love for learning and for one another, and the aspiration to reach their full potential. Our children are inspired to value and engage with physical education. By exploring a range of activities and skills, they find their passion and enthusiasm to succeed.
Our PE curriculum aims to help pupils build knowledge, develop key skills, and find joy in learning. We encourage curiosity, creativity, and confidence so that every child can love learning and aspire to achieve their best. We aim for all children to:
Develop a life-long love of physical activity, alongside the knowledge and understanding of the vital benefits that this will bring to their lives.
Have a well-grounded understanding of what they are physically and mentally capable of and find enjoyment in their perseverance of achieving.
To be inspired to develop skills in particular disciplines, which challenge themselves and others, leading to opportunities outside of school, taking their talents further.
Understand sportsmanship, the Christian values and the spirit of fair play.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced from Early Years to Year 6 to ensure learning builds step by step. Lessons are practical, engaging and inclusive, allowing all pupils to access the subject and succeed. We focus on developing key vocabulary, understanding and meaningful application of knowledge. Our PE lessons are delivered through our PPA package and within the class teacher’s timetable. At St Margaret’s we follow a progressive program that ensures that our children develop their skills, which are built on from previous learning. We continually tailor our PE curriculum to meet the needs of our children, adapting and developing ways in which to inspire. Our Early Years PE program is solely taught by their class teachers.
We know our curriculum is successful when pupils can talk confidently about their learning, show pride in their work, and demonstrate progress over time. Pupils enjoy PE and understand its importance in everyday life. Our children actively engage and look forward to their PE lessons. We combine a range of indoor and outdoor opportunities, where our children find an environment to shine. Early movement skills are mastered, which are then applied across a range of activities. Through team games, our children start learning simple tactics and quickly move on to using attacking and defending skills effectively. Simple balances and movements become gymnastic and dance sequences, woven together with skill and knowledge. Individual and team successes are celebrated enthusiastically throughout our school. Our children have a great sense of pride in our school's history of sporting success and teamwork. This legacy continues to thrive with more and more of our children having the confidence to compete in locality competitions.
We enrich learning through experiences that bring PE to life- such as trips, workshops, clubs and visitors. These opportunities help children love learning and aspire to new challenges.
We aim to inspire our children by exploring a wide range of different sports and activities. For example St Margaret’s was visited last year by Lewis Crathern, who is a professional kitesurfer. Our children loved his assembly and demonstration, where he explained in fantastic detail his favourite sport.
St Margaret’s provides a great deal of after and before school sports club opportunities. These include football, netball, gymnastics, running, musical theatre, street dance and multi skills. We have also just introduced a bushcraft club.
The Angmering School, with all their secondary school facilities, conveniently is only 5 minutes drive or a 25 minutes walk away. Many of our competitions, fixtures and festivals are held here.
On our calendar this year we have: The Angmering Mile (cross country), basketball, football, netball, multi skills, gymnastics, dance, badminton, tag rugby, indoor athletics, handball, rounders and stoolball.
We have created a sports leadership program in conjunction with The Angmering School, where some of our Year 6 pupils are asked to attend training sessions throughout the year and the opportunity to practice and demonstrate their new knowledge and understanding within our school and in locality competitions.
