Our Vision

At St Margaret’s CE Primary School, we believe every child is Created to Shine. In RSHE, we nurture each child’s talents and curiosity so they grow in confidence and understanding. Our curriculum is rooted in our values of Love and Aspire- love for learning and for one another, and the aspiration to reach their full potential.

Our vision at St Margaret’s is for all pupils to aspire to be the best they can by acquiring and developing the skills of determination, responsibility, resourcefulness and resilience. It is our role to prepare children and young people for life's opportunities and challenges by developing their knowledge, skills, and attributes. This includes fostering skills for making informed decisions, building healthy relationships and managing their emotional and physical well-being.

Our Aims

Our RSHE (Relationships, sex and Health Education) is taught through our PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) lessons or circle time lessons. Our curriculum aims to help pupils build knowledge, develop key skills, and find joy in learning. We encourage curiosity, creativity, and confidence so that every child can love learning and aspire to achieve their best.

At St Margaret’s, children’s wellbeing, happiness and safety are our first priority, and PSHE & RSHE is one of the key ways in which we share this with children. We regard PSHE & RSHE as an important, integral component of the whole curriculum; it is central to our approach and at the core of our ethos. Our broad and balanced PSHE & RSHE curriculum, ensures that it:

The aims of Relationships, Sex and Health education (RSHE) at our school are to:

Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place
Help pupils develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy
Give them the understanding of the importance of mental health and how to improve it
Teach them how to keep themselves safe both in the physical world and online
Help them understand and give them to skills to navigate healthy relationships
Prepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene
Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships
Teach pupils the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies
Respect for their own bodies and those of others
The importance of family life, placing sexual development within the Christian context of love, faithfulness and forgiveness.

Our RSHE curriculum is broad and balanced, ensuring that it:

Promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our children and of society;
Prepares our children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they already face and for adult life;
Encourages our children to understand how all actions have consequences and how they can make informed choices to help themselves, others and the environment.
The teaching is age appropriate and spiral so they will revisit topics in later years

How We Teach

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced from Early Years to Year 6 to ensure learning builds step by step. Lessons are practical, engaging and inclusive, allowing all pupils to access the subject and succeed. We focus on developing key vocabulary, understanding and meaningful application of knowledge.

We value the importance of discussion and deliver our RSHE lessons through a mixture of circle time, team games,debates, short video clips, practical activities, theory lessons, visiting speakers and theme days/weeks. We mainly use the award winning Kapow scheme which is planned by specialist teachers ensuring that the lessons progress, content is at an age appropriate, the correct vocabulary is used and all information is up to date. Our skilled teachers adjust and tailor this to meet their classes needs.

Topics and themes are also taught through our daily Collective Worship and as well as having a strong cross curriculum in computing, Faith and Wonder, LIteracy, Geography, Maths and Science lessons. Pupils also have access to pastoral care and guidance.

The Difference It Makes

We know our curriculum is successful when pupils can talk confidently about their learning, show pride in their work, and demonstrate progress over time. Pupils enjoy RSHE and understand its importance in everyday life.

We are proud of the positive and kind ethos of our school which our pupils demonstrate. This is due to our clear RSHE curriculum, quality teaching, strong school values, high standards and reward systems. Evidence of the children’s learning is shown through pupil voice, photographs, written work, video clips and drawings. Pupils enjoy our RSHE lessons saying:

“I love PSHE because it is more fun than the other lessons and you get to learn stuff which is useful with friendships and in life” (Year 4)

Enrichment Opportunities

We enrich learning through experiences that bring RSHE to life- such as trips, workshops, clubs and visitors. These opportunities help children love learning and aspire to new challenges.

RSHE is an extremely broad subject with a wide range of objectives which are covered and enhanced by opportunities such as residential team building trips, school and class talent shows, competitions, school performances and community events such as May Day celebrations and the year six tea dance. We have many visitors ranging from the fire service, road safety officer, RNLI, medical staff and police.
